Documents and Health Requirements — The Foundation of Your Trip

Bringing the right documents and vaccination proof is non-negotiable. Missing paperwork can delay or deny entry.

Essential Travel Documents

  • Passport: Valid for at least six months from date of entry is the widely recommended standard. Many airlines and immigration officials require this. If your passport is near expiry, renew before booking travel.
  • Visa: Umrah visas are typically obtained through approved travel agencies, embassies, or the official Saudi e-visa system where applicable. For 2026, consult the Saudi Embassy or your authorised operator for the exact process: standard Umrah visa, e-visa or tourist visa with Umrah permission (where offered). Keep both digital and printed copies.
  • Flight tickets and hotel/transport confirmation: Have printouts and mobile screenshots of itineraries, hotel bookings in Makkah and Medina and ground transport vouchers.
  • Proof of accommodation and return ticket: Immigration may request accommodation confirmation and onward/return flight details.
  • Identification: A secondary ID (national ID card, driver’s licence) can be helpful.
  • Visa agency paperwork / authorised operator letter: If you’re travelling with a UK- or international-based operator, carry their contact details and booking/reference paperwork.

Health Documentation and Vaccination Proof (2026 guidance)

  • Vaccination certificates: As of 2026, Saudi health requirements can change. Historically, meningococcal ACWY vaccine proof has been mandatory for pilgrims; additional proof (e.g., polio for travellers from endemic countries) may be required. COVID-19 vaccine requirements have been relaxed globally but may be recommended. Always check Saudi Ministry of Health (MoH) and embassy updates before travel.
  • Routine vaccinations: Ensure your routine immunisations are up to date (tetanus, diphtheria, polio). Seasonal influenza vaccine is recommended, especially during high seasons such as Ramadan and school holidays.
  • Yellow fever: If travelling from or via an endemic country, a yellow fever certificate may be required.
  • Prescription list and GP letter: If you take prescription medication, carry a letter from your doctor listing medicines and dosages. Keep prescriptions in original packaging.
  • Travel insurance and EHIC/GHIC: Buy comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation and COVID-related contingencies. UK travellers should also check GHIC coverage (if eligible) but not rely on it for all services.

Copies and Digital Backups

  • Photocopies: Leave one set of copies with family and store another in your checked luggage.
  • Digital scans: Store encrypted scans of passport, visa, insurance and prescriptions in cloud storage and on an encrypted USB or phone.
  • Emergency contacts list: Include family, tour operator, local emergency numbers and the UK FCDO or your country’s embassy in Riyadh/Jeddah.

Ihram Clothing — What to Pack and How to Wear It

The ihram is central to Umrah. Pack the right items and understand practical considerations.

Men’s Ihram Essentials

  • Two white unstitched sheets (Rida and Izar): Choose breathable cotton or linen for hot climates. Bring an extra set in your checked luggage in case of spills.
  • Ihram belt (izar belt/sash): Keeps the lower cloth secure without stitching.
  • Lightweight undershirt for transit only (optional): Men are prohibited from wearing stitched garments that cover the shoulders once in the state of ihram, so many put on the ihram right before entering the miqat.
  • Unstiched head covering: Men must not cover the head in ihram; however, an easily removable cap is useful for travel before entering ihram.
  • Sandals and socks: Open-toe sandals are commonly used to comply with ihram rules. Bring sandals with a back strap for long walking distances in the Haram precinct.
  • Unscented soap and deodorant: No scented products while in ihram. Pack unscented personal care items for use while in ihram.

Women’s Clothing and Modesty Considerations

  • Comfortable abayas (2–4): Lightweight, breathable fabrics in neutral colours that dry quickly. Bring a mix of long abayas for Haram visits and lighter ones for travel.
  • Hijabs and underscarves: Bring several breathable hijabs to rotate and a few underscarves to secure hair.
  • Modest, loose trousers or maxi skirts and long-sleeved tops: For times between prayers and travel.
  • Prayer clothes: Women often take an extra abaya or jilbab specifically for prayer.
  • Footwear: Comfortable flat shoes or slip-on trainers suitable for long walking and mosque etiquette.
  • Women do not wear the men’s ihram; their normal modest dress is sufficient. Menstruation rules: Women on menstrual cycles cannot perform tawaf until ritually pure. They should maintain ihram and complete other rites permissible during menstruation. Pack appropriate hygiene products and a plan to perform tawaf after ghusl.

Special Notes on Ihram Etiquette and Items to Avoid

  • Perfume: Men and women must avoid perfumes during ihram. Store perfumes in checked luggage.
  • Shaving and hair removal: Men should not shave or cut hair while in ihram until permissible rites (tahalul). Pack razors in checked luggage and a small beard trimmer if needed post-tahalul.
  • Jewellery: Wear minimal jewellery during rites; remove unnecessary valuables before entering holy precincts to reduce the risk of loss.

Footwear — Comfortable, Practical Shoes for Umrah

Your feet will carry you through long distances and crowded floors. Invest wisely.

Recommended Types of Shoes

  • Walking trainers: Lightweight, breathable trainers with good arch support for daily walking. Choose slip-on or easy-lace styles for security screening and quick removal.
  • Sandals: Open sandals that comply with ihram for men; for women, sandals are fine for the mosque but ensure they’re modest (no offensive images/branding).
  • Indoor slippers: Lightweight for hotel rooms and for use during prayers.
  • Waterproof pair: Occasional rain or wet floors require something quick-drying.

Shoe Practicalities and Fitting Tips

  • Bring two pairs: alternate pairs to reduce blister risk.
  • Break in new shoes at least two weeks before travel. New shoes cause painful blisters which ruin the experience.
  • Insoles and blister care: Pack gel insoles and blister plasters (Compeed). A lightweight orthotic insert can help for those with foot conditions.
  • Shoe storage in Haram: Consider a small secure padlock or use hotel safe for expensive footwear.

Medications and First-Aid Kit — Health Preparedness

Illness and foot problems are the most common issues for Umrah pilgrims. Prepare a comprehensive kit.

Prescription Medication Essentials

  • Original prescription medication in labelled containers: Keep in hand luggage with GP letter.
  • Controlled medications: Check Saudi regulations; some medications may require special permits. Consult your embassy or Saudi authorities.
  • Antibiotics and chronic medication: Bring at least a month’s supply plus copies of prescriptions in case of delays.

Over-the-Counter and Emergency Items

  • Painkillers: Paracetamol and ibuprofen.
  • Anti-diarrheal: Loperamide and oral rehydration salts (ORS).
  • Antacids: For travel-related indigestion.
  • Antihistamines: For allergic reactions and hay fever.
  • Motion sickness medication: Useful for bus transfers or ferry crossings.
  • Antiseptic wipes and antibacterial gel: For hygiene in crowded places.
  • Bandages and blister plasters: Must-pack for long walking days.
  • Sterile gauze and medical tape: For larger cuts.
  • Cold and throat lozenges: For dry air and polluted environments.

Special Health Considerations

  • Prescription inhalers and epinephrine pens: Always carry them in hand luggage with prescriptions and usage instructions.
  • Heat illness prevention: Electrolyte tablets and sunscreen. Know early signs of heatstroke and how to respond.
  • Where to seek medical help in Saudi: Familiarise yourself with the nearest hospitals or clinics through your travel operator. Save local emergency contacts and the UK embassy abroad.
